Girl Scout Cookies – History and Available Flavors

Cookies can change anyone’s mood and make a person happy. While you can easily find cookies in stores, you can also purchase them from the Girl Scouts website. In 1912, Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scout initiative to empower young girls and help them develop different skills. Over 1.5 million girls are a part of the program, making it the most extensive girl-led entrepreneurial venture. They sell approximately 200 million cookies every year.

The history behind Girl Scout Cookies
Every successful organization has a powerful story that makes it more special. Here are a few highlights of the Girl Scout Cookies’ history:

1910 to 1940
It started in the 1910s when women and little girls began baking and selling delicious cookies. In 1917, Mistletoe Troop was the first to bake and sell them as a service project in their high school cafeteria. By 2020, the idea had spread to the entire nation, and Girl Scouts everywhere baked cookies with the help of their mothers. At that time, the price was around 25 to 35 cents per dozen. Around 1936, the national Girl Scout organization licensed the first commercial bakers to produce the cookies that would be sold nationwide by the program.

1940 to 1980
In 1944, due to a shortage of staple food ingredients during World War II, Girl Scout Cookie Council found an innovative way to raise funds for social activities by selling Girl Scout calendars. Soon after the war, sales picked up. In 1951, three varieties of Girl Scout Cookies were available: Sandwich, Shortbread, and Chocolate Mints. And the number of licensed bakers increased to 14 to meet market demand. The cookies were now packed in aluminum foil or cellophane boxes, so they looked like they came straight from the oven. In 1979, Saul Bass designed the first Girl Scout logo that featured on the boxes.

1980 to 2010
In 1982, seven varieties of cookies were produced at licensed bakers, out of which three (Thin Mint, Peanut Butter Sandwich, and Shortbread) were mandatory, and four were optional. Eight years later, in the early 1990s, GSUSA introduced awards for Girl Scout Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, and Seniors to appreciate the girls’ effort. In the early 2000s, new packaging designs were introduced. Moreover, the youngest in the Girl Scouts, the Daisies, also participated in selling the cookies.

2010 to 2022

In 2010, they came up with the first gluten-free cookie, and in 2014, the business went online with the launch of a digital cookie platform. In 2016, a proud moment in the program’s history, the little and bright scouts sold cookies to Hollywood stars at the Academy Awards! In 2021, they received halal and kosher certifications. And in 2022, Girl Scouts introduced a new variety of cookies on the menu: Adventurefuls.
