Healthy Dental Habits to Avoid and Remove Plaque

If you have ever been to the dentist and got a filling done or a root canal, you should know it is because of tooth decay, which is also called cavity. This cavity cause by plaque. Plaque is an outer layer that envelops the teeth and causes harm to the teeth and gums. It is when the decay has been ignored for too long, the roots of the teeth get affected and causes great amount of pain making root canal or an extraction the only solutions.

Healthy Dental Habits to Avoid and Remove Plaque
Extraction requires an implant, which is replacing the old tooth with a new ceramic tooth that costs lot of money. Plaque remover measures are therefore important for long-lasting healthy teeth and gums.

The food and drinks a person consumes cause plaque. When teeth are not cleaned properly after eating or drinking, the plaque starts attacking the enamel layer of the teeth and that leads to cavity or decay. Plaque, when not cleaned by proper and regular brushing, it turns into tartar and when tartar accumulates above the gums, it causes the gums to swell and bleed. This condition of swelling and bleeding of gums is called gingivitis. Here are some causes and from these causes plaque remover measures can be derived.

Causes:

There is no one particular thing that causes plaque. These are habits that later result in settlement of plaque on the teeth and cause further harm.

Irregular brushing
The teeth need to be brushed at least twice a day. When teeth are not brushed twice or even once, there is no way for the food and drinks residue to wash away and not form a layer of plaque over time.

Not flossing
Flossing is cleaning the spaces between two teeth. The food that we chew often gets stuck between the teeth and just brushing is not enough as the bristles of a toothbrush are unable to remove debris from the narrow space between the teeth. It is therefore important to floss them.

Irregular or no visits to the doctor
We often think there is no problem with our teeth as long as we can eat anything and drink anything without facing any problems like sensitivity or pain while biting and/or chewing. But it can prove to be risky not just for your teeth, but for your medical bills as well. Precautionary measures are cheaper than those big dental medical treatment bills. And as far as the teeth are concerned, only paying a visit to the doctor when there is a problem would mean some serious treatment is about to follow which could have been avoided had the doctor seen it before or while it was getting settled.

Not knowing or following natural ways and foods good for teeth
Ever wondered how people would brush their teeth back when there were no toothpaste and toothbrushes and no other product that had fluoride in them or that cleaned the teeth? There are many natural ways to keep teeth healthy and clean. For example, chewing apple, cucumbers, carrot, and other raw fruits with the skin on is a good habit as these foods remove the plaque from teeth even though they have some sugary content.

Eating too much sweet
Sugar is one of those carbohydrates that bacteria thrive on. Sugary food and drinks stick to the teeth giving a golden opportunity to bacteria to cause harm to the enamel layer of your teeth. These bacteria turn sugar into acid and that causes damage to the teeth.

Here are ways how that can work as plaque remover and make sure it doesn’t cover your teeth at all:

  • Make sure to brush the teeth properly. Brushing first thing when you make up helps in plaque remover as it cleans the teeth properly. But brushing at night before you go to bed is just as important as there should not be any food debris stuck in your mouth to cause any harm
  • Flossing teeth regularly can work as a great plaque remover as it removes food particles from the difficult places where a toothbrush cannot reach
  • Regular gargling, using toothpaste with fluoride in it, and regular rinsing are some measure that work as plaque remover
  • Avoiding sweet and sugary diet. Anything that contains high amount of sugar, especially something that isn’t natural must be avoided to keep teeth healthy for a longer period of time
  • Visit your dentist regularly
  • Quit smoking and avoid alcohol. Smoking does more harm to the teeth than people think. It is bad for overall health but causes tartar to appear as well. Most smokers are asked to quit smoking after their dental visits
  • Consider getting a professional cleaning done, but ask your dentist first

Apart from these measure for plaque remover, there are many natural remedies you can follow such as using banana and orange peels for the cleaning.
